So to test this out I drove by the train station today where I know there are bands at the doors that will set it off and nothing happened.

That's messed up - I'd call back. And I would think that they should have told you about getting the update database online instead of just doing a hard reset and leaving it at that. Let them know that what they suggested to you was unsuccessful.
I would think (hope) that they would want to make it right.

There shouldn't be any problems with Escort. I have the original receipt, purchased from a supplier listed on their website. It wasn't more than a year ago so I'm still warranty covered.
